Training and Technical Assistance
How Can We Assist You?
ABHPC offers both training and technical assistance (TTA) and training supports to those providing primary prevention services to youth, families, and communities. ABHPC services are centered in diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, health equity considerations, and community-based processes that center community voices. Available at no cost to you, these ABHPC services range from individualized consultation and coaching, customized training development and implementation, and curriculum-based trainings available either onsite or virtually. Each requestor can receive up to 32 hours of technical assistance annually. Get started by completing the TTA request application.
Individualized Consultation
Work directly with one or more of our professional consultants on the issues of your county, prevention organization, or community. Receive expert consultation and recommendations tailored to meet your individual needs. Topics for consultation might include (but is not limited to) areas such as:
- Program planning or development guidance
- Designing community needs assessments
- Identifying appropriate evidence-based strategies
- Program outreach and engagement opportunities
- Developing and launching community coalitions
- Developing a sustainability plan
- And more!

Professional Competency Trainings
ABHPC offers Professional Competency Trainings, which aims to make state-of-the-art research and practices in the field of Substance Use Disorder (SUD) prevention more accessible to communities throughout California.
The series addresses emerging issues and proven practices in the SUD prevention field. The trainings are in line with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Strategic Prevention Framework, each training covering at least one of the Framework’s steps.
Earn continuing education units (CEUs) while taking live Professional Competency trainings. CEUs are provided through the following organizations: the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT), the California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Providers (CCAPP), and the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). Customized Trainings
When you need training in a specific skill or content area that meets a unique local need, our team of expert consultants are available. They will work closely with you to develop and deliver customized trainings based on the information most relevant to reaching your goals. Topics of interest include: strategic planning, logic model development, evidence-based prevention strategies, and local evaluation strategies.
*Only certificates of completion are available for customized trainings. CEUs are not available for customized trainings.
Publications and Resources
CARS and the ABHPC TTA team have a strong reputation for creating and disseminating publications that are relevant, timely, easy to understand, and credible. The appropriate resources can make your work easier by translating sophisticated research findings into concrete tips and strategies for application in real-world settings. What are the TTA service priority areas?
Research-Based Prevention Strategies
A major objective of the ABHPC TTA Project is to promote the widespread development and implementation of research- and evidence-based prevention approaches. Customized assistance is available to assist prevention providers in assessing, implementing, and/or replicating proven prevention practices, programs, and policies with fidelity.
Outcome-Based Planning
The ABHPC TTA services emphasize local capacity building to develop and implement processes by which local programs can measure outcomes and utilize evaluation data to guide prevention planning and improvement efforts. Consultation and training is available, from the basics—including logic model development, identification of feasible outcomes, and selection and/or development of instrumentation—to more advanced strategies for data analysis, interpretation, and reporting.
Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services
Technical assistance, training, and resources are available to prevention providers to foster the development and implementation SUD prevention services designed to meet the diverse cultural and linguistic needs of communities throughout California, and most importantly, to develop cultural responsiveness in ways that are relevant to your local communities and participants.
Sustainability
ABHPC TTA services address the need for the prevention field to develop long-term funding strategies and to envision enduring prevention programs to serve their communities. Consultation services focus on the need for multiple strategies including building long-term program infrastructures and partnerships in addition to securing funding.
